Ces \u00ab&nbsp;chemins qui marchent&nbsp;\u00bb, tout trac\u00e9s et plus s\u00fbrs que les routes, ne n\u00e9cessitent qu&rsquo;un entretien limit\u00e9 et cr\u00e9ent des relations faciles avec les provinces \u00e9loign\u00e9es. Le tonnage transport\u00e9 est plus important que par terre et le co\u00fbt en est moins \u00e9lev\u00e9. On pourra toutefois distinguer&nbsp;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>suivant l&rsquo;utilisation<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>les <strong>chalands<\/strong>, dits parfois \u00ab&nbsp;chalands de Loire&nbsp;\u00bb, propres \u00e0 la navigation sur ce fleuve. Bateaux robustes et compliqu\u00e9s, construits en ch\u00eane et pouvant \u00eatre verg\u00e9s (m\u00e2t\u00e9s)<\/li><li>les <strong>sentines <\/strong>ou <strong>all\u00e8ges <\/strong>pour le transport des marchandises<\/li><li>les <strong>toues <\/strong>ou <strong>bachots<\/strong>, bateaux l\u00e9gers de service non m\u00e2t\u00e9s, destin\u00e9s \u00e0 \u00eatre remorqu\u00e9s ou employ\u00e9s au balisage<\/li><li>les <strong>fl\u00fbtes <\/strong>pour le transport du vin<\/li><li>les <strong>margottats <\/strong>pour le transport des mat\u00e9riaux de construction<\/li><li>les <strong>gabares <\/strong>pour les tireurs de sable ou de jard, les <strong>tutureaux <\/strong>pour le transport du sable<\/li><li>les <strong>bascules <\/strong>(appel\u00e9es aussi <strong>basouilles<\/strong>) ou <strong>bateaux viviers<\/strong>, transportant le poisson d&rsquo;un pays \u00e0 l&rsquo;autre<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>suivant leur origine<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>les <strong>sapines <\/strong>ou <strong>sapini\u00e8res <\/strong>(du fait du mat\u00e9riau de construction) dites <strong>saint-rambertes<\/strong> (qui d\u00e9rivent en salambardes) ou roannaises suivant le lieu de construction. Elles sont destin\u00e9es \u00e0 \u00eatre d\u00e9chir\u00e9es et \u00e0 \u00eatre vendues comme bois de chauffage au port de destination.<\/li><li>les <strong>saumuroises <\/strong>ou <strong>culs-de-poule<\/strong> et les <strong>nantaises <\/strong>ont un profil particulier rappelant l&rsquo;architecture maritime (\u00e9trave pointue et poupe arrondie). Ce bateau naviguant sur le Cher a \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00fbrement l&rsquo;un des derniers de sa cat\u00e9gorie.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#0c6e88;font-size:25px\"> <strong>CONSTRUCTION et R\u00c9PARATION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Le chaland est adapt\u00e9 \u00e0 la Loire<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>plat, sans quille, il peut naviguer sans beaucoup d&rsquo;eau du fait de son faible enfoncement en charge.<\/li><li>long et \u00e9troit, avec des c\u00f4t\u00e9s peu \u00e9lev\u00e9s, donc maniable, il peut passer dans un chenal \u00e9troit.<\/li><li>l\u00e9ger, il peut \u00eatre remis \u00e0 l&rsquo;eau sans difficult\u00e9 lors des \u00e9chouages.<\/li><li>l&rsquo;avant \u00e9tant plat et relev\u00e9, les sables et les \u00e9paves flottantes peuvent glisser sous sa coque.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Son \u00e9volution&nbsp;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u00e0 l&rsquo;origine&nbsp;: pirogue monoxyle (creus\u00e9e dans un seul tronc d&rsquo;arbre). Sa forme est rectangulaire, en plan comme en coupe transversale. Ses dimensions ne peuvent d\u00e9passer celles du tronc d&rsquo;arbre initial (celle trouv\u00e9e dans le lit du Cher avait 6,5&nbsp;m de long&nbsp;&#8211; 0,75&nbsp;m de large et 0,25&nbsp;m de profondeur).<\/li><li>deuxi\u00e8me \u00e9tape&nbsp;: \u00e9largissement de la pirogue monoxyle en la fendant dans le sens de la longueur et en intercalant une ou plusieurs planches entre les deux moiti\u00e9s, d&rsquo;o\u00f9 la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de pi\u00e8ces de liaison transversales.<\/li><li>troisi\u00e8me \u00e9tape&nbsp;: \u00e9laboration \u00e0 partir de planches d\u00e9bit\u00e9es en sapin ou en ch\u00eane. Aucune pi\u00e8ce de m\u00e9tal n&rsquo;entre dans la construction. Le m\u00e2t peut \u00eatre abaiss\u00e9 au moyen d&rsquo;un c\u00e2bleau d&rsquo;\u00e9tai pour passer sous les ponts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A l&rsquo;arri\u00e8re&nbsp;: <strong>un lourd gouvernail<\/strong>, la \u00ab&nbsp;piautre&nbsp;\u00bb, servant \u00e0 la fois de gouvernail et de stabilisateur (quille). Puis un guinda ou guindard (cabestan) permettant d&rsquo;enrouler l&rsquo;\u00e9tai du m\u00e2t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A l&rsquo;avant&nbsp;: <strong>une grosse ancre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A l&rsquo;avant et \u00e0 l&rsquo;arri\u00e8re&nbsp;: <strong>les arron\u00e7oirs<\/strong>, pi\u00e8ces de bois en dent de scie fix\u00e9es de chaque c\u00f4t\u00e9 du bateau permettant de coincer un grand b\u00e2ton pour manoeuvrer rapidement le bateau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Au centre&nbsp;: <strong>une cabane couverte<\/strong> servant de logement au patron, avec dalle pour l&rsquo;\u00e2tre&nbsp;; plus tard, un fourneau pour faire la cuisine, une planche en guise de table et deux couchettes superpos\u00e9es.<br>En g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, sur le second bateau (ou \u00ab&nbsp;tireau&nbsp;\u00bb) se trouvait la cabane o\u00f9 les compagnons mariniers dormaient. Dot\u00e9es d&rsquo;un certain confort, les cabanes sont des esquifs trois fois plus longs que larges et qui peuvent atteindre 24&nbsp;m au maximum de la poupe \u00e0 la proue. Ces machines \u00e9taient de types tr\u00e8s divers&nbsp;: haute&nbsp;&#8211; basse ou tr\u00e8s basse pression, \u00e0 balancier, oscillante, avec ou sans condenseur.<br>La machine, plac\u00e9e au centre du bateau sous le pont, actionnait des roues \u00e0 aubes d&rsquo;un diam\u00e8tre de 3&nbsp;m environ, situ\u00e9es de chaque c\u00f4t\u00e9 du bateau.<br>Les machines, aliment\u00e9es au charbon, \u00e9taient d&rsquo;un mauvais rendement probablement d\u00fb \u00e0 leurs chaudi\u00e8res \u00e0 faces planes. Comme lubrifiant on utilisait le suif puis, vers la fin des ann\u00e9es 1840, on commen\u00e7a \u00e0 essayer une nouveaut\u00e9 appel\u00e9e  \u00ab&nbsp;graisse am\u00e9ricaine&nbsp;\u00bb (probablement graisse industrielle).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&rsquo;\u00e9quipage d&rsquo;un bateau \u00e0 vapeur comprenait au moins un capitaine ou patron, un agent comptable, un m\u00e9canicien et un chauffeur, trois matelots et un mousse. En marche, un des matelots se mettait \u00e0 la proue en tant que pilote, et un autre \u00e0 la poupe comme barreur. Le capitaine commandait d&rsquo;une plateforme situ\u00e9e entre les deux tambours des roues \u00e0 aubes&nbsp;; il communiquait avec le pilote, le barreur et les voyageurs, dans le bruit des palettes frappant l&rsquo;eau, au moyen d&rsquo;un porte-voix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les m\u00e9caniciens et les chauffeurs travaillaient sous le pont, dans des conditions rendues extr\u00eamement p\u00e9nibles \u00e0 cause du manque d&rsquo;isolation thermique de la machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le prix du voyage \u00e9tait plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 \u00e0 la mont\u00e9e qu&rsquo;\u00e0 la descente puisqu&rsquo;on y consommait davantage de charbon. En 1936 il subsistait deux \u00e9tablissements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">o0o<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#0c6e88\"><strong>Les bateaux de passeurs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ces larges bacs goudronn\u00e9s transportaient attelages et voyageurs d&rsquo;une rive \u00e0 l&rsquo;autre.
